"Thank you to the GCSW for including me in the CRISP trip to DC, it's a privilege to go represent and advocate for social work on such an important stage." - MSW Student Leticia Barrios
Student Advocacy Day at the Capitol, held as part of Social Work Day on the aHill and hosted by the Congressional Research Institute for Social Work and Policy (CRISP), is a national convening that prepares emerging social work leaders to engage in policy and advocacy. Grounded in the theme “Our Voices Matter: Your Voice is Your Vote,” the experience underscores the vital role social workers play in connecting community needs with legislative action. The Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW) sent 11 MSW students to participate in skill-building sessions focused on advocacy, policy communication, and civic engagement, culminating in direct meetings with legislators on Capitol Hill where students applied their training through real-time policy discussions and community-informed advocacy—reinforcing the event as both a powerful learning opportunity and a call to action for advancing equity, justice, and community well-being.
