2023 NASW-TX Chapter Conference Recap: Social Work Breaks Barriers

The 2023 National Association of Social Workers - Texas Chapter Conference was a remarkable gathering of social work professionals, students, and alumni.

This year’s conference theme was the same as the 2023 NASW Social Work Month theme, “Social Work Breaks Barriers.” The theme conveys that social work breaks down barriers that prevent people and communities from thriving, particularly in the area of mental health.

The events sub-theme, Inclusivity, was selected by NASW-TX Executive Director Will Francis, LMSW, is an example of a barrier-breaker that helps foster a sense of belonging and safety by embracing different perspectives, cultures, and ideas.

Variations of these themes were present amongst the 80+ diverse conference program sessions designed to deliver immediate take-aways easily applicabale to your social work practice.

One standout highlight of the conference was the presentation of the NASW TX Champion Award to GCSW Clinical Professor Sandra A. Lopez, a distinguished alumna from the class of 1980 where she served as Clinical Professor at the GCSW for 27 years! She also served on the NASW TX Board where she was honored with the naming of the Sandra Lopez Leadership Institute.
